Back in 2015, Sean received his first 3D printer —a hand-me-down knockoff PrusaI3 with a clear acrylic frame — from his brother. Like most, he went down the rabbit hole of community designed 3D models. He had an introduction to 3D modeling through school and wanted to be able to make that knowledge tangible.

Sean Moran was a junior at Ohio State University when he started interning in 2018. At the beginning, he was assisting Matt Organiscak, IC3D COO, with print service sales. Sean would create a representative CAD file showing a similar design and use-case for each customer’s needs and would use it to show IC3D’s capabilities and applications. By the end of his internship, Sean was the printer technician for the fleet of large format printers and assisting in the day to day work of completing 3D printing orders. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Systems Engineering, he became one of IC3D’s problem-solving account managers.

My goal is to make processes and workflows easier on the 3D print service side of the business. I strive to find creative ways to apply my industrial engineering degree in a mechanical context. My degree is all about people and problem solving.

Sean Moran, IC3D Printers

One of Sean’s first jobs was a bell replica for the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial. Printing over a 3-week period, this was one of the more fun projects to illustrate. Sean created the slicing profile used to create the 3-axis fabrication tool path, consulted on the design, and managed the printing of the replica.

While spending most of his time setting up profiles and finding new print orientations, Sean also maintains and upgrades the Virago 700 and E-class 3D printer fleet. He searches for and conveys anything that can be upgraded and updated after pushing machines to their limits through stress tests minimizing potential future maintenance needs. When asked where IC3D is headed and what he’s most excited about in our print service, the answer is simple: “Repeatability”.

I see print shop being more sustainable with having the closed loop ecosystem of printer development. We’re able to have real time fixes and upgrades to our machines allowing us to expand our capabilities and reducing both lead-times and cost.
