IC3D Piloting Regional Quality Control Centers

In response to the critical shortages faced during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, decentralized and democratized additive manufacturing (AM) of personal protective equipment (PPE) became a pivotal strategy to mitigate supply chain disruptions. However, the surge in production highlighted a significant gap in the ecosystem: quality control for 3D printed products, especially those produced by small-scale manufacturers or hobbyists. To address this, IC3D has developed a forward-thinking proposal in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Proposing a Solution to Quality Control Challenges

IC3D’s proposal, titled “Regionalized Quality Control Centers for Mobilization of Distributed Additive Manufacturing,” aims to establish regional AM quality control centers. These centers intend to bridge the gap between rapid manufacturing capabilities and the critical need for quality assurance in 3D printed products, particularly medical devices like PPE.

The initiative is not just a reactive measure for emergencies like the pandemic but also a proactive approach to everyday manufacturing challenges faced by small businesses and individual manufacturers. By linking with local NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) organizations, these centers will facilitate easier access to necessary quality control testing, thus ensuring that products are safe, reliable, and adhere to standards as they are established for Additive Manufacturing.

Optimizing During Peace and Crisis

During national emergencies, these centers will serve as operational hubs to streamline quality control for rapidly manufactured products across the region, ensuring quicker deployment of safe and reliable PPE and other critical items. In non-emergency periods, they will continue to support the AM community by offering commercial, fee-for-service quality testing. This dual functionality not only enhances our nation’s preparedness for crises but also supports the ongoing growth and sustainability of small AM businesses.

Leveraging IC3D’s Expertise

Leveraging years of expertise in 3D printing services, IC3D is uniquely positioned to help develop and pilot such centers. Our extensive experience with high-quality 3D printing materials and in-house developed machinery, like the Virago 700 industrial 3D printer, provides IC3D with the necessary tools to implement rigorous quality controls and assist other manufacturers in elevating their production standards.

Strengthening U.S. Manufacturing

The establishment of Regional AM Quality Control Centers by IC3D, in partnership with NIST MEPs, represents a significant step towards strengthening the resilience of the U.S. manufacturing landscape, particularly in the context of additive manufacturing. This initiative not only addresses immediate needs in times of crisis but also supports the overall advancement of the AM sector, ensuring that the U.S. remains at the forefront of manufacturing innovations.
